Issues of Private Postal Services.

Since the deregulation of postal services in New Zealand many organizations have issued stamps, some indistinguishable to all intents and purposes from stamps produced by New Zealand Post, some which are seen on mail, and some which seem to be solely aimed at parting stamp collectors from their dollars. The list following is not complete, but contains details of all such labels that I have managed to find confirmation of (generally by obtaining postally used examples on mail from within New Zealand). These were initially arranged in rough chronological order; however, as this proved too cumbersome, they are now arranged according to which service issued them.

Up to date information on the status of private postal services can be found on the Ministry of Economic Development web site at http://www.med.govt.nz/pbt/post_pol/register/index.html .

  • 1998, November 16. Definitive Stamp.
    • No value (35c) Emblem of National Mail New Zealand Limited.
The earliest postmark date I have seen on one of these stamps is 4 December 1998. Around the edges of this stamp is a pattern of square dots. This stamp was issued in booklets of ten, and apparently the pattern of square dots around the edges varies within the booklet, so that either five or ten variants exist from that source. I am also told that the stamp exists from coils in which every stamp differs slightly in the arrangement of these dots! All I can say is, that with regards to all these stamps I have seen, I have never seen two alike.

More information on the now defunct National Mail New Zealand Limited could once be found at http://www.nationalmail.co.nz/ , however, this site is now unavailable.

Issues of Pete's Post Limited.

This information is taken from the Pete's Post Limited web site. Very few dates of issue of stamps issued prior to 2003 can be deduced from information on this this site, so I have segregated the listing into various types of stamps: first, the pictorial stamps; then, the publicity stamps; then, miscellaneous stamps; then stamps for which the date of issue is known or can be deduced. Many of these stamps have the class of service inscribed below the face value; "Local" for 35c stamps and "National" for higher values, or a city name. This class is only noted where it is a city name, or if there are (or may be) stamps in the same design inscribed with another city name or class of service.
The only "Pete's Post" postal usage I have seen are these stamps used on covers addressed to Invercargill, which have also been run through a New Zealand Post meter machine and subsequently postmarked by various New Zealand Post cancellations.

Issues of New Zealand Mail Limited, formerly Posties Choice New Zealand Limited.

This organisation began as Postie's Choice Limited, and issued several stamps giving their web page as either www.blacksheepstamps.com or www.stampsatwork.com; I tried several times to bring up these pages on my computer but was never successful. Shortly after the company changed its name to New Zealand Mail Limited in late 2004, it finally got itself an operational web site at http://www.newzealandmail.co.nz/. However, very little information has ever been made available about the various different stamps issued, nor their many printings (even a conservative estimate would place the number of distinguishable stamps produced by this company into many thousands, possibly over 10,000). Most of these stamps show serial numbers and printing dates (given as month and year) which I have taken, in the absence of any other information, as the dates of issue. I have also noted down the earliest postmark I have seen on any such stamp if it has been at all possible.
Further information on stamps issued to advertise "Resene" brand paints can be found at http://www.resene.co.nz/comn/whtsnew/stamps_online.htm.

Issues for New Zealand Mail, and its predecessors Stamps at Work, Black Sheep Stamps and Postie's Choice, are being included in an expanded, illustrated catalogue here. This catalogue is not fully ready for use yet, but the information at that site for many of the New Zealand Mail series is now more comprehensive than information on this page, and consequently I am replacing such information with links to the releveant pages on the new site where appropriate.

Index to Serial Numbers on Alternate Postal Provider Stamps.

The index to New Zealand Mail serial numbers, formerly included here, is now part of the expanded catalogue of New Zealand Mail stamps here. Serial numbers on stamps issued by DX Mail and Fastway Post are still indexed here.
The year given for each stamp is the year under which it is listed in the main listings of alternate postal provider stamps; not necessarily the year the design was first issued, and possibly not even the year the printing was released.

It is also obvious from this list that many numbers have been used for more than one different stamp; often in the same month. Some of these apparent duplicates may be due to errors in transcribing the (very small) serial numbers; but I have double checked others with a magnifier while typing up these notes and am certain that the numbers given in those cases are those printed on the stamps themselves.

This is possible as Universal Mail New Zealand only deliver to overseas addresses. Mail thus posted does not enter the New Zealand Post system at any point, being freighted overseas and placed into the postal system elsewhere.
